A coroner has started an investigation into the death of a 21-year-old Ceredigion man who fell to his death on Snowdon.

Dylan Arwel Rattray of Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, near Aberystwyth died on Good Friday after falling near the summit.

It is understood Mr Rattray and a friend were making their way down from the summit when they took a wrong turn.

They had tried to turn back when he fell 500ft (152m) down a cliff.

Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team and a rescue helicopter from RAF Valley on Anglesey were scrambled to the scene.

Walkers heard Mr Rattray's friend call for help and alerted rescue teams, who winched him to safety using the helicopter.

A police spokesman said Mr Rattray died "despite the best efforts of those involved".

A post mortem examination was carried out before North West Wales coroner, Dewi Pritchard, launched the investigation on Tuesday.
