Headway charity treasurer Malcolm Hulse stole £10,000

The Anglesey treasurer of a charity to help people affected by brain injuries has been found guilty of swindling it out of £10,000.

Caernarfon crown court heard Malcolm Hulse, 53, from Gwalchmai, wrote "blank cheques" to himself.

A jury found him guilty of six charges of fraud but he was cleared of stealing £414 of charity shop takings.

Hulse will be sentenced at Mold crown court on 3 December and has been warned to expect an immediate jail term.

Judge Niclas Parry added that if the cash was paid back it would clearly extend the sentencing options.

The offences took place when Hulse was the treasurer of the Anglesey branch of Headway between 2007 and 2010.

Irregularities were found by the national finance director of Headway.

After the case Luke Griggs, the communications manager for Headway, said it was planned that volunteers will now rebuild the branch to provide much needed support to those affected by brain injury.

He said Hulse had wilfully deceived and manipulated fellow committee members, who were all working on a voluntary basis.

The over-riding feeling was relieve that it was over and they could now move forward, but also sadness that it should have happened, he added.
