Tesco withdraws from Llanrwst supermarket talks

Plans, which had caused concern to traders, to build a new supermarket in Llanrwst have been shelved.

A developer has been in discussions with Conwy council for some time about possibly building a Tesco store in the Plas yn Dre area of the town.

However, Tesco confirmed that while it had been in talks it did not intend to proceed with any plans.

The council says it still has a "vision for Llanrwst" which includes a possible retail development.

About 150 people attended a public meeting in February to voice concerns about the redevelopment of the Plas yn Dre area, and the possibility of attracting Tesco.

Local traders were afraid that a supermarket on the outskirt of the town would pull people away from the centre and affect business.

A private company, Cheshire-based Consolidated Property Group, has been in discussions with the local authority about the site.

A council statement said: "The developer has informed Conwy County Borough Council that a client does not intend to proceed with developing a store at Llanrwst."

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We have been in discussions with the developer but there are no plans for a Tesco in Llanrwst."
