A coach holiday firm in Gwynedd has gone into administration after more than 90 years in business.

Silver Star Holidays Limited, in Caernarfon, blamed the current economic climate and increasing fuel costs, adding that 12 jobs would go.

The firm is part of a consumer protection scheme which is working with administrators to refund people who have already paid for holidays.

Managing director Elfyn Thomas said he and his staff were "devastated".

Mr Thomas said: "It is with deep regret that I announce that Silver Star is no longer able to trade.

"We have tried everything to salvage the business, but have unfortunately failed to withstand the effects of the recession and ever increasing fuel costs.

"Our main concern at this point is to reassure all our customers who have paid a deposit or the full amount for a coach holiday, that they will be fully refunded."

Mr Thomas added that he would like to thank staff and customers who had been loyal over the decades, and for their support during "these difficult times".

Silver Star is a member of the Bonded Coach Holiday (BCH) scheme, and it is working with the administrators to refund monies paid for package holidays.

People wanting to claim a refund for a package holiday should contact the Federation of Passenger Transport (UK) Limited on 0207 2403131.
