Girl, 10, wakes up to intruder in her bedroom in Prestatyn

A 10-year-old girl woke up at home to find an intruder crouching over her bed, a court heard.

The man is alleged to have grabbed her throat before being disturbed by the girl's mother coming up the stairs at their home in Prestatyn, Denbighshire.

Darrell Mercer, 28, from Prestatyn, has gone on trial at Caernarfon Crown Court accused of trespass with the intent to commit a sexual offence in April.

The jury is expected to be sent out on Thursday to consider its verdict.

The court was told the defendant left the bedroom and said he thought he was in his own home.

He started to complain his leg was hurting and walked downstairs with the mother before laying down in the porch.

In a police interview played to the jury, the girl said she had felt the man breathing on her face. His breath smelled of alcohol.

When she opened her eyes he was crouching on her bed and when she began screaming he grabbed her by the throat with both hands.

The girl said she was "really scared".

She locked herself in the bathroom while her brother called police.

When her mother went to reassure her, the defendant started walking off and refused to come back.

He left a distinctive red and grey jacket and a mobile phone, and police traced him to his flat where they found him asleep in bed, the court heard.

He later said he had been drinking in Rhyl and remembered nothing after leaving a pub there.
