Ruthin Festival alcohol ban lifted for Top of Town gig

A ban on drinking alcohol at the climax of a music festival in Denbighshire has been lifted after talks between police, council officials and organisers.

An online petition was launched when Ruthin Festival committee was told it must be promoted as a non-alcohol event to comply with licence conditions.

It followed concerns over anti-social behaviour by a minority previously.

Police have now relaxed conditions at the six-hour musical climax of the week-long festival on Saturday.

Festival-goers will be permitted to take small quantities of alcohol into the Top of Town live music event at St Peter's Square, which runs from 14:00 BST.

'Very little trouble'

Those drinking in pubs will be allowed outside with plastic glasses.

But police will use powers to seize "excessive amounts" of alcohol and remove drink from anyone causing trouble.

The Top of Town event features a number of musicians including popular Welsh band Gwibdaith Hen Fran and marks the end of festival week which runs from 25-30 June.

Festival chairman Gruff Hughes said: "I'm very glad that the police are going to relax the rules and use their discretion.

"The festival has been going for many years and we've had very little trouble."

Denbighshire district police inspector Gary Kelly said: "We are committed to ensure that this family event is a success."
