Public urged to shape Rhyl's new coastal defence plans

Residents are being asked their opinions about proposals for a £10.6m coastal defence scheme off the coast off Rhyl.

Plans to upgrade defences in the west of the town have been submitted to Denbighshire and Conwy councils.

The existing defences vary in design and are showing signs of fatigue, said officials.

The plans are available to the public at Rhyl library until the end of January 2011.

They can also be viewed at Denbighshire's Caledfryn office in Denbigh during office hours.

Denbighshire council said the current promenade retaining wall to the east of the Foryd Bridge and the wall to the east of the River Clwyd channel were displaying signs of fatigue.

There are fears this could lead to a breach, causing extensive flooding in Rhyl.

A council bid for funding through a European coastal defence scheme was approved in January 2009.
