Firefighters worked for an hour to free a man who was impaled on railings in an accident early on Wednesday morning.

He fell over the metal fence behind houses on Beaufort Road in Llandrindod Wells just after midnight.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the railing had penetrated his lower leg.

An off-duty paramedic was among the first people at the scene and helped to stabilise and comfort the man as the rescue operation got under way.

Two fire crews from Llandrindod Wells used cutting equipment and an airbag to release him.

The operation was completed at around 01:10 GMT.

The casualty was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny by paramedics. His current condition is unknown.
