21,000 council tax discount claims to be checked in Flintshire

More than 21,000 people in Flintshire who have the 25% single person reduction on their council tax are to have their claims checked.

Flintshire council is to use a firm which will match the claims against data from credit reference agency, Experian.

The local authority said nearly one-in-three households claim the discount.

A similar project carried out in 2011-12 identified about £190,000 worth of incorrect discounts being claimed.

The council said: "While the vast majority of these residents are claiming the discount correctly, there may be cases where the council have not been informed about a change in household occupancy, which affects the reduction, or a false claim has deliberately been made.

"Where incorrect claims are identified the council will be ending the claims and seeking to reclaim the discount from an appropriate date."
