A teenage boy who died following a house fire in Blaenau Gwent has been named.

Alex Lewis, 17, was killed when the blaze broke out in Stewart Street, Cwm, in the early hours of Sunday.

Emergency services were called at around 03:00 BST and paramedics tried to resuscitate him at the scene.

He was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, but later died. Gwent Police said the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

Abbi Powell, 18, grew up with Alex and they both attended Ebbw Vale Comprehensive School.

Paying tribute to her friend, she said: "He was always smiling, he was cheeky and sarcastic, he loved everyone and everyone loved him.

"He was hoping to join the army... he had a piercing smile that was infectious."
