Meanwhile, an overturned lorry on the A48 near Newport is causing severe delays for Friday rush-hour traffic.

Diversions are in place following the incident on the westbound carriageway between Nash Road roundabout and Corporation Road.

In addition, Traffic Wales said the southbound A467 Rogerstone bypass near Newport is closed due to an accident between Morrisons roundabout and the junction with Forge Road.

'Witnesses'

North Wales Police have since reopened the A470 at the junction with A494 after carrying out an investigation into the earlier fatal collision.

Sgt Emlyn Hughes said: "At the time of the collision we believe that there was a stream of traffic travelling in the area and it is therefore very possible that a number of motorists and passengers witnessed the incident."

Motorist were reporting long delays as they diverted through the town, with added bank holiday weekend traffic, and visitors travelling to Bala for the start of the Urdd National Eisteddfod.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information is asked to contact North Wales Police's roads policing unit on 101, quoting reference number R076330.
