The Royal Navy's HMS Dragon received the freedom of Cardiff at a ceremony on Sunday.
Officers and crew of the Type 45 destroyer paraded through the city to celebrate the honour as part of their five day visit.
HMS Dragon's Commanding Officer, Captain Rex Cox, said it was an honour to receive the award and ship's company was proud of its links to the city and Wales.
Others to have received the award, which is a purely honorary title, include Nelson Mandela and Dame Shirley Bassey.
