Man arrested on suspicion of murder in Newport

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in Newport.

Gwent Police said they were called to a property in Bryn Bevan at around 11:15 BST on Monday where they found the body of a 21-year-old woman.

The 27-year-old Newport man is in custody and officers said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

The coroner has been informed and a post-mortem examination is due to take place to determine the cause of death.

Det Ch Insp Roger Fortey said: "This is a tragic incident and I want to reassure residents that everything that can be done is being done to establish the circumstances of this death.

"We are not looking for any other person in connection with this incident.

"Officers are at the address and any local residents with concerns are asked to speak to them directly.

"I would urge anyone who may have any information about the incident to contact Gwent Police by ringing 101."
