Up to 50 homes have been evacuated in Merthyr Tydfil following the discovery of a suspect device in the street.
South Wales Police cordoned off an area around Heol Tai Mawr in the Gellideg area after being alerted at 13:16 GMT.
A police spokesperson said explosive ordnance experts had reviewed images and it was a "potentially viable" device.
Roads in the area were closed, with residents nearby evacuated to Aberfan leisure centre.
Eyewitnesses said the device was detonated by a bomb disposal team, and residents were returning to their homes at 17:00 GMT.
The police said a forensic investigation would now get under way.
