The new director of Wales' only professional symphony orchestra has been named as Michael Garvey.

He will take up the position at the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales in December.

Garvey, who has worked at Arts Council England and Classic FM, is currently chief executive of the Academy of Ancient Music.

BBC Cymru Wales Director Rhodri Talfan Davies said Mr Garvey had a "distinguished track record".

Garvey said the role the orchestra could play in representing Wales around the world was "particularly interesting".
