A man has died after his car crashed into the back of a lorry in a layby on the A55 in Flintshire.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at Northop Hall at around 16:30 BST on Thursday.

Motorists faced long delays with one lane closed for more than two hours as fire crews used cutting equipment to free the man.

He was taken to Wrexham Maelor hospital where he later died.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, has not yet been formally identified but his family has been informed.

The driver of the lorry is believed to have sustained minor injuries.

Police said the crash - which involved a grey Nissan Almera and a blue Scania lorry - happened on the westbound carriageway.

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the North Wales Police roads policing team on 101.
