Paul Flynn MP: Press 'cannot be trusted' so Leveson law needed

Nearly a week after the Leveson report was published, the disagreement over how it should be implemented rumbles on.

Last night MPs spent six hours debating Lord Justice Leveson's call for an independent self-regulatory body for newspapers backed by law.

Cross-party talks are ongoing but Labour and the Liberal Democrats favour legislative backing while the Conservative culture secretary expressed "grave concerns" at the idea without ruling it out.

David Cameron is due to meet newspaper proprietors and editors to discuss the issue on Tuesday.

Conservative MP for the Vale of Glamorgan Alun Cairns told BBC Radio Wales it was important not to rush into a decision while Paul Flynn, Labour MP for Newport West, said the law was required because the press could not be trusted.
