Aberpergwm mine shutdown puts 270 jobs at risk

Help

A colliery in the Neath Valley which employs the largest number of miners in Wales is suspending production.

American firm Walter Energy says the shutdown plans for Aberpergwm Colliery will affect about 270 workers.

Up to 100 employeers may be required to stay on to keep the mine in a safe condition pending a possible resumption of operations.

The firm blames a fall in demand in the coal industry and a challenging economic environment.

Nick Servini reports from outside the mine.
