Teacher on 'ridiculous' new exam

Westminster Education Secretary Michael Gove has urged his Welsh counterpart Leighton Andrews to follow his lead and replace GCSEs with a single end-of-course exam.

On Monday, Mr Gove revealed that GCSEs in core subjects in England will be replaced by a qualification called the English Baccalaureate Certificate (EBC).

Mr Andrews has said that he will make his own decision on GCSEs in Wales in November.

He described Mr Gove's plans as "a backward step", saying there was still support within Wales for GCSEs.

Bill Mulry, who taught GCSE and A-level age pupils in Merthyr Tydfil for 23 years until he retired this summer, said he believed Mr Gove's new exam sounded "ridiculous".
