Pre-Olympic Cardiff canoe event restart after storms

The Canoe Slalom World Cup is expected to begin after being postponed due to the stormy weather

A canoe slalom event postponed as Wales was hit by its worst June storm in eight years is expected to begin in Cardiff Bay later.

Competitors from 38 countries are due to take part in the pre-Olympic event.

High winds and driving rain brought damage and disruption across Wales on Friday and led to the cancellation of Aberystwyth and Ceredigion County Show.

Wind and rain is expected in north and mid Wales during the morning but the skies are set to clear from the south.

The Canoe Slalom World Cup was one of the most high profile casualties of gale-force winds that struck across the country on Friday.

Organisers say the opening races will be added to the weekend schedule and tickets for Friday will be valid for Saturday.

The south and west coasts were hardest hit by the storms with gusts of 67mph recorded at Mumbles Head, Swansea, while an amateur weather watcher in Merthyr Tydfil says he recorded a month's-worth of rain over 36 hours.

Environment Agency Wales (EAW) warned of flooding, with up 14 flood alerts across the day.

The high winds led to the closure of the M48 Severn Bridge for a while council officers in Pembrokeshire dealt with a series of tree-fall incidents, some which blocked roads.

British Waterways says the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal was blocked in four places by fallen trees.

Mist forming

BBC Wales weather forecaster Derek Brockway said the weather was set to improve on Saturday, although there would still be some rain in the north and breezy on the coast.

He said the south and west would be brighter with the winds easing towards the night.

He said: "I wouldn't rule out a shower in the south and west otherwise it should be dry. Some mist forming and quite cool as well.

"At the moment, I'm not 100% sure about how Sunday will turn out. There is a risk of some rain, especially in mid Wales and the south but it may miss us."
