Cattle passport stickers to monitor TB testing in Wales

Farmers taking part in the voluntary scheme will place stickers on cattle passports

A passport sticker scheme for cattle is being introduced in Wales to help farmers and buyers identify when animals last had a clear TB test.

The voluntary scheme supplies farmers with stickers to place on cattle passports to show test dates.

A panel was appointed earlier this year to review scientific evidence on tackling bovine TB in Wales.

Controversial plans for a badger cull in west Wales were put on hold in June while the review is conducted.

After the sticker scheme was piloted in north Wales, the Carmarthen and Cardiff Regional TB Eradication Boards agreed to implement the scheme in Wales.

Under the scheme, TB testers will provide farmers with sticker for each clear tested animal they plan to move or sell within 60 days.

The farmer must then put the sticker on the passport and fill in the details, including the first day of the TB test.

Ms Glossop said: "Although pre-movement testing is a legal requirement in Wales the sticker scheme is entirely voluntary, but one that will be of great help to most farmers.

"Any decision to purchase cattle should take into account the TB test history of the herd of origin. This initiative will make it much easier for farmers who are either selling or buying cattle."
