Police have launched a large-scale search for a man who has disappeared from his home town in Falkirk.

David Paterson, 52, was last seen at about 8:00 on Monday in the Bainsford area of the town.

A search involving the Police Scotland helicopter and police dogs began on Monday evening and continued throughout the night.

Officers believe Mr Paterson may be in the St Andrews or East Neuk areas of Fife.

He was described as being 5ft 3in tall, with a slim to medium frame and has dark grey, short hair and grey stubble.

'Very concerned'

When last seen, he was wearing a blue fleece, dark denim jeans and tan leather shoes.

He may also be wearing a gold wedding band along with a silver chain and carrying a rucksack.

Insp Grant Sangster, who is in charge of the search, said: "David's family are very concerned for his wellbeing and we are doing everything we can to find him, however, the assistance of the public is vital in finding him and returning him to his family.

"We are deploying all the resources at our disposal and I would urge everyone to check their gardens, sheds, garages, outbuildings and anywhere else he may be seeking shelter."

Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
