Charges of assault have been dropped against former Dundee United footballer Ralph Milne.

He had appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court accused of assaulting Fiona Spence in a house in Carnoustie.

His claim of self-defence was accepted after the court was told that Ms Spence could not attend court for medical reasons.

The case was deserted "pro loco et tempore", meaning that charges could be raised again at a future date.

Sheriff Peter Paterson told Milne: "The matter is now not to proceed, at least for the moment.

"The Crown could re-raise the charges in future but for now they will not be proceeding."
