Carnoustie shops destroyed in major fire

A row of shops in the centre of Carnoustie have been destroyed by a major fire.

The outbreak was spotted shortly after 20:00 on Friday by the crew of a fire engine returning from another call.

At the height of the blaze, 30 firefighters and six fire engines were involved in bringing it under control and preventing it spreading to neighbouring flats.

The shops affected include a launderette and a delicatessen.

Group Manager Roy Dunsire said: "A fire engine from Carnoustie was returning from a fire call to Arbroath when it happened to come across the fire, so they were almost immediately on scene and able to start tackling the fire.

"However, the fire was spreading very quickly and threatening an adjoining block of flats.

"Fire crews therefore reacted very quickly to this risk and assisted by the local police evacuated the flats and set about using covering jets to protect the flats from becoming involved in the fire."
