Perth and Kinross libraries to launch e-book service

E-book Perth and Kinross libraries will run the e-book pilot for two years

A new e-book lending service is set to be launched at libraries in Perth and Kinross.

The two-year pilot will offer library members a wide range of titles which can be downloaded to read on tablets, smartphones, laptops, PCs or e-readers.

The service will launched at the end of October.

Borrowers will not have to worry about returning their electronic reading material, as it will simply delete itself after a set period of time.

Staff are currently being trained to run the new service ahead of the launch on Wednesday 31 October.

Overdue books

Tutorials and demonstrations have also been organised for customers, who will be able to access the service from the Perth and Kinross libraries' webpage.

The council's lifelong learning convener, Councillor Bob Band, said it would offer access to its collections around the clock.

And he said lenders would no longer have to worry about late fees.

"There will be no charges for overdue books," he added.

"Once your borrowing time is up, the book will simply disappear from your device, so you don't have to remember to take your library books back."

The e-book lending service will be evaluated at the end of the pilot project, which is being funded by the Crockart Foundation - a trust set up to benefit the people of Perth and Kinross through local libraries.
