Dundee man guilty of molesting girls despite blaming brother

A disabled man collapsed in court after being found guilty of molesting two girls despite trying to blame his dead brother.

At the High Court in Edinburgh, George Young slumped in the dock when a jury found him guilty of three charges of indecency against children.

The former quarry worker from Dundee had denied the charges of abuse from 1970s and 80s

Young, 66, was remanded in custody for later sentencing.

The court had heard that Young had begun molesting one child in 1977 when she was aged seven and that he had previous convictions for assault with intent to ravish and for having sex with a mental defective.

Brother blamed

During the trial the 66-year-old had denied knowing the girls and when detectives questioned him about the allegations he told them it was "all lies".

He was told that both girls had named him as responsible for the abuse and replied: "It will be Norman my brother as we both look alike."

Young told the court in 2005 his brother, who knew he was dying, said that he wanted to get something off his chest, he said his brother had told him he had used his name when he was "mucking about" with the girls.

Rita Rae QC agreed to continue the case for sentence but remanded Young in custody and placed him on the sex offenders register.

She told him: "The abuse of children, young children, is one of the most serious charges that can appear in this court...It can destroy lives."
