Grzegorz Budach jailed for attempting to rape woman in Dundee

A baker who dragged a woman into bushes before attempting to rape her has been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Grzegorz Budach attacked the woman as she walked to a party in Dundee's Lochee area on 17 September last year.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard the 24-year-old had grabbed the woman in a fireman's lift and carried her into bushes, where he tried to strip her.

Passing sentence, judge Lord Bannatyne described the offence as "serious and nasty".

Advocate depute Shirley McKenna, prosecuting, told the court how the victim tried to escape by using a stone to hit Budach on the head.

But she said he continued his attack, ignoring the woman's screams and flinging away her mobile phone when she tried to use it.

Matching footprints

The woman managed to hit him again with a stone, allowing her to flee. A passer-by then helped her get to a police station.

Police later found footprints matching Budach's trainers near the scene of the attack, along with clothing, jewellery and coins.

Officers also found muddy clothing at his then home in Dundee.

The court was also told that following the incident Budach had scratched knees and injuries to his nose and forehead "consistent with the use of blunt force impact".

Budach, who has since moved to Edinburgh, admitted attempted rape.

Solicitor advocate George Pollock, defending, said Budach had not been in trouble before, either during his stay in Scotland or, previously, in Poland.

He added that his client had expressed remorse for what he had done.
