Search after abandoned tent found on West Highland Way

Police are searching for a walker after abandoned camping equipment was found on the West Highland Way.

A green tent and dark blue rucksack were discovered by a member of the public near the Glengoyne Distillery, north of Blanefield.

It is thought the equipment was left sometime between 11:00 and 15:30 on Sunday.

The 96-mile (154km) footpath runs from Milngavie in East Dunbartonshire to Fort William in the Highlands.

Central Scotland Police said the tent had been found close to the West Highland Way's junction with the A81 and Dumgoyne.

Officers initially thought it belonged to a missing 47-year-old woman last seen at the peace camp outside Faslane Naval Base on 2 September.

However, friends of the woman confirmed the gear was not hers after being shown photographs.

'Thorough search'

A spokeswoman for the force said: "Police are keen to trace the owner of the property and ensure their wellbeing."

Lomond Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 14:30 on Monday to help search for the walker in "foul weather conditions".

A team spokesman said: "The search centred on where the rucksack was found on the West Highland Way just north of Dumgoyach hill.

"The wooded areas, including Dumgoyach, and ground bordering the fast flowing Blane Water were thoroughly searched, initially by a police dog handler, then by MR personnel."

The rescue team was stood down at about 18:00.
