Dundee teenager remanded over Facebook 'riot' page

A teenager has appeared in court accused of using Facebook to encourage others to riot in Dundee city centre.

Liam Allan is alleged to have created a public event listing on the site in the wake of the disorder which has spread through English towns and cities.

The page is said to have been available for all members of Facebook to view.

Mr Allan, 18, of Benvie Gardens in Dundee, made no plea or declaration during the three-minute long hearing. He was remanded in custody.

Prosecutors say the Facebook listing "incited others to riot within Dundee city centre" on Tuesday evening.

City riots

The teenager appeared on petition in private at Dundee Sheriff Court accused of conducting himself in a disorderly manner and committing a breach of the peace.

Bail was opposed by fiscal depute Lisa Welsh, and Sheriff George Way remanded Allan in custody. Mr Allan's lawyer, Doug McConnell, said his client would appeal the bail ruling.

Mr Allan was arrested on Tuesday evening after allegedly setting the page up during the day at his home in Dundee.

Violence and looting has gripped areas of London and the city centres of Manchester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Gloucester and other towns.

M Allan's case was continued for further examination. He is expected to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court again next week.

In a separate case, 16-year-old Alexander McQuarrie, from Glasgow, has been charged with encouraging others to riot in Glasgow.

The teenager is also accused of setting up a public Facebook page to incite disorder.
