Stirling University staff vote for strike action

The university announced plans to make 17 people compulsorily redundant

Staff belonging to the University and College Union (UCU) at the University of Stirling have voted to take strike action in a row over job cuts.

The union said nearly two-thirds of members (64%) voted for the action.

It comes after the university announced plans to make 17 staff compulsorily redundant at its Institute of Aquaculture.

The union said it would meet on Monday 11 April to discuss when the action would take place.

In addition to voting for strike action, 83% of members backed action short of a strike.

UCU Scottish official Mary Senior said: "Today's result should act as wake-up call to the university. Their argument for making these cuts simply doesn't add up and will deprive the Scottish fish farming industry of a vitally important institute.

"Had the university taken the time to consider our proposals we could have avoided this action. It is essential now that management listens to our members and consults with us over their plans."
