Borders General Hospital grounds smoking ban begins

Borders General Hospital has become the region's last healthcare site to ban smoking in its car parks and grounds.

The move is in line with Scottish government plans to make every hospital smoke free by 2015.

Dr Eric Baijal, of NHS Borders, said the BGH ban had been the "most challenging" as it was the only acute hospital in the region.

He added that the ban sent a "powerful message" about the health risks attached to smoking.
