Police have appealed for witnesses after jewellery worth more than £33,000 was stolen from a house in the Borders.

The incident happened at a property in Waverley Road in Melrose at the weekend.

Police Scotland said jewellery and a tablet device were taken while the owners were on holiday.

Officers were called to the scene at about 10:00 on Saturday after a neighbour spotted that a house on the street had been broken into.

PC Corrine Bird said: "An iPad2 and jewellery worth more than £33,000 were taken and other items were recovered in a neighbouring field.

"Police have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and we urge anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area to come forward."
