Glenrath Farms chicken shed plan decision delayed

Councillors have asked for further information on amended plans for a large poultry shed to house 44,000 chickens in the Scottish Borders.

They were being advised to approve the proposal by Glenrath Farms at Whim Farm near Lamancha.

They already have approval for a shed to house 328,000 hens.

However, the company said customers were increasingly demanding eggs from barn systems and they wanted to change the building.

The facility would be about half the height of the previously-consented structure.

It is estimated the hens will lay about 13 million eggs a year.

Council planning officials recommended approval, saying the latest proposals represented "significant advantages" over the already-approved design.

However, Scottish Borders Council said it wanted more details before agreeing to the plans.
