Drivers in Dumfries are facing traffic disruption as a section of the town's bypass is closed for the first phase of a £1m improvement project.

A stretch of the A75 from the Glasgow Road roundabout to the Cargenwater roundabout will be shut from 19:00 on Friday until 06:00 on Monday.

The work is scheduled to be carried out over three weekends.

Diversions will bring traffic through Dumfries along Glasgow Street and the Castle Douglas Road.

Transport Scotland says the western end of the bypass has suffered cracking and potholing and the work is vital to prevent any further deterioration.

The rebuilding and resurfacing programme will use techniques which it is claimed will strengthen the carriageway and help protect the surface from extreme weather in the future.
