Police in the Borders have appealed for information after a buzzard was found shot dead near a loch in the region.

The incident happened next to a wooded area close to St Mary's Loch at the start of the month.

A dog walker found the bird on 6 March and it is believed it may have been there for about three days.

Pc Hannah Medley said the bird would have suffered a "cruel, slow and painful death" and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

"We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area any time from the morning of Sunday, 3 March, who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to contact police," she said.

"Anyone else who has any information that can assist our enquiries should also get in touch."
