Plans to turn a long-disused pub into a "community hub" in Hawick's Burnfoot area have attracted community interest.

Burnfoot Community Futures hopes to secure more than £1m from the Big Lottery Fund.

It could create a facility at the former Burnfoot Roadhouse, offering everything from a cafe to childcare, and tidy up part of the estate.

Richard Knight, of Burnfoot Community Futures, said the proposals had proved popular with residents.

"The Burnfoot Roadhouse has always been a part of the community in Burnfoot," he said.

"But, unfortunately, in the last five or six years it closed down due to less people going out drinking in public houses and just drinking within their own houses.

"The building closed and over the last five years it is starting to look a bit rundown, a bit derelict."

He said he hoped an "injection" of funds could help "bring it back to life".
