The second phase of a £40m upgrade on the main route between the Scotland-England border and the central belt will start next month.

It is part of a five-year project on the A74(M)/M74 between junction 22 Gretna and junction 12 Millbank.

The first phase of the works was completed in November.

Once finished, the project will deliver more than 80 miles of new road surface on the route that carries more than 30,000 vehicles-a-day.

The work will be carried out by Autolink, which has a contract with the Scottish government's transport agency, Transport Scotland, for the road.

The latest phase gets under way on 23 February.

Traffic will be limited to 40mph through the works and motorists have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys or to consider using an alternative route.
