Police are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist was found lying outside a hospital with a fractured skull after falling from his bike.

The 43-year-old was discovered on the exit road at Borders General Hospital near Melrose at 18:30 on Wednesday.

He is currently being treated in the hospital with injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

Lothian and Borders Police have asked people to come forward to establish the "full circumstances" of the incident.

A police spokesman said: "We are still trying to establish how the cyclist fell from his bike and are keen to hear from pedestrians or motorists who were in the area just after 18:30 on Wednesday.

"Anyone with information that can help officers with their investigation is asked to contact police immediately."
