Man dies after 'fall' in Newton Stewart street

A 51-year-old man who died after being found collapsed in the street was probably injured in a fall, police have said.

Derek McCalman, from Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway, was found unconscious in the town at about midnight on Friday.

Police said initial inquiries showed he had fallen over and his injuries "may have been the cause of his death".

Officers appealed for people in the area at the time to contact them.

They said: "To assist with our inquiries if you were in the area of Albert Street, Dashwood Square and Queen Street in Newton Stewart, between the hours of 22:30 and midnight on Friday 26 October, please call us on 0845 600 5701."
