Margaret Kerr Unit fundraisers confident over target

Fundraisers say they are confident the £1m target needed for a first dedicated palliative care unit in the Scottish Borders will be met.

The Margaret Kerr Unit is to be built at the Borders General Hospital site near Melrose.

The total cost of the project - kickstarted by a bequest from a former nurse - has been estimated at £4.5m.

Fundraising manager Clare Oliver said there was every reason to believe the final slice of cash would be found.

"It has been incredibly touching just how much support we have had from people in the Borders for this project," she said.

"It has certainly become very apparent that the Margaret Kerr Unit will mean a lot to a lot of people.

"We are hopeful that we can achieve the target by the end of March in 2013."
