Scottish Borders Council winter service cuts approved

The Borders has been badly affected by the weather over the past two winters

Scottish Borders Council has approved plans to cut its winter service plan in order to save money.

The authority agreed to reallocate grit bins, reduce an emergency desk service and use new gritting equipment to make road treatments more cost effective.

The moves will save £50,000 but come after the region experienced harsh winters in the past two years.

The council has said the proposals can reduce spending but still provide a more efficient service.

It said the savings would come through efficiencies and would not affect frontline services.
