Voters in the Clydesdale constituency wanting to back a Lib Dem in the Holyrood election will not be able to after the party's candidate failed to get his papers in on time.

John Paton-Day, a councillor for the Scottish Borders ward of Leaderdale and Melrose since 2007, failed to lodge his nomination papers before the deadline.

However, he remains on the South of Scotland regional list.

Scottish Labour won the South Lanarkshire seat in 2007.

The party has held the seat, which includes Carluke and Lanark, since Holyrood first convened in 1999.

The Liberal Democrats came fourth in the largely rural constituency at the last Scottish Parliament election.
