Work on a major new town development in Aberdeenshire has got under way.

The Chapelton of Elsick project, south of Aberdeen, has a long-term target of 8,000 homes.

Elsick Development Company (EDC) is behind what is described as a "£2bn town", featuring plans for a primary school, leisure and business facilities.

The site is a 2,000-acre (809 hectare) area of farmland near Newtonhill. Work started on Wednesday afternoon.

EDC director Lord Southesk said: "This momentous day is the culmination of many years of planning.

"It will be really exciting to see the diggers start on site creating what will become a thriving new sustainable community."
