Tributes have been paid to a mother-of-two who died in an Aberdeenshire car crash.

Mary Gillespie, 32, from the New Deer area, was driving a silver Ford Ka which crashed at about 18:00 on Wednesday on the A981 near New Deer.

She was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary but later died.

Relatives said in a statement: "As a family we are saddened and shocked by the sudden loss of Mary, who was a devoted mum to her two children."

They added: "After living in Aberdeen, Mary moved back home to New Deer, to give her children a better childhood, as she lived for her two children and worked to make sure they were always happy.

"We now have to begin the incredibly difficult task of trying to come to terms with the loss of Mary, who will be hugely missed, and we would appreciate privacy while we mourn."

The road was closed for five hours while an investigation was carried out. Police have appealed for witnesses.
