A woman has admitted sending a female Moray councillor hate mail after she beat her husband in an election.

Carolle Ralph felt forced to step down in December after spending six months representing Lossiemouth's Heldon and Laich ward.

Joan Stewart, 59, admitted causing Mrs Ralph - who defeated David Stewart - to suffer fear and alarm.

Sentence at Elgin Sheriff Court was deferred for the preparation of reports.

Sheriff Susan Raeburn said: "This is a serious matter not only for the Lossiemouth community but also for the wider community.

"This is a repugnant and reprehensible act."
