Aberdeenshire death crash driver jailed for 18 months

A man found guilty of causing death by careless driving after his friend died in a crash in Aberdeenshire has been jailed for 18 months.

William Webber, 36, died following an accident in a Porsche in Strichen in April 2011.

Douglas Calder, 39, had denied causing his death by driving dangerously.

He was found guilty by a jury of the lesser charge of causing death by careless driving. Calder was jailed at the High Court in Edinburgh.

'Devastating' impact

Calder was taking his friend to buy a tax disc for his car when the crash occurred.

Judge Lord Stewart told Calder: "The impact on the Webber family has been devastating."

Mr Webber's wife, Emma, suffered a miscarriage and felt she had lost everything, said the judge.

Lord Stewart heard that Calder, of Andorra, had shown "a great deal of remorse" which was genuine and deeply felt.

The judge also banned Calder from driving for four-and-a-half years and ordered that he resit a test before going on the roads legally again.
