William Watson, 86, guilty of sex charges at High Court in Aberdeen

An 86-year-old man has been found guilty of sexually abusing two young children, after a trial at the High Court in Aberdeen.

William Watson was convicted of four charges of using lewd, indecent and libidinous practices and behaviour towards the girls.

Watson, of Aberdeen, also faced charges of rape but the jury found the charges not proven.

Sentence was deferred for background reports until next month.

The pensioner began abusing the girls in the 1960s and the offences continued for several years.

Branded lies

Defence advocate Graham Robertson told the court that Watson had no previous convictions.

During the trial, Watson admitted that he had touched two children inappropriately.

However he denied raping the youngsters and branded the allegations as "lies".

Judge Lady Scott told Watson he had been convicted of "serious" charges.
