A dog has been rescued by firefighters after falling through ice on Orkney.

Sandy, an 18-month-old golden Labrador, had ventured out on a frozen surface after seeing a swan.

Kirkwall firefighters were called out and used a long ladder as a support to reach the exhausted animal and free it from the ice.

Relieved owner Eric Wallace said the efforts of all rescuers had been fantastic, and warned others of the dangers of ice when walking their pets.

The dog was later taken to the vets, and was said to be recovering well - as well as getting lots of attention.
