Police have appealed for witnesses after a woman was sexually assaulted in a car after the Stonehaven fireballs Hogmanay event.

The incident took place on or near the A90 northbound between Stonehaven and Portlethen between 01:00 and 03:00 on 1 January.

Grampian Police said the 33-year-old woman had been picked up in a silver or grey five-door hatchback around Allardice Street.

She was left "shaken but uninjured".

Det Sgt David Howieson said the victim was seen leaving the area of Allardice Street in the company of a man described as being aged in his 50s, who was wearing a red hat and a long, dark coloured waterproof coat.

He said: "We are extremely keen to trace this male or speak with anyone who may have seen him or the victim."

He added: "We would like to hear from anyone who was driving on the A90 northbound between 01:00 and 03:00 on 1 January and who saw a silver or grey hatchback vehicle parked on or near to the carriageway."
