Kirkwall regeneration views sought by Orkney council

Public support for the Kirkwall plans has to be demonstrated

Members of the Orkney public are being invited to comment on plans to regenerate Kirkwall town centre.

Orkney Islands Council will be submitting grant applications later this year to Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund for building restoration and regeneration works.

Public support for the plans has to be demonstrated.

An online survey is being carried out until 20 August on the council website.

The council's head of strategic development and regeneration, Evelyn Mathershaw, said: "The grant funds would go towards not just making Kirkwall town centre look good, but also to ensuring the long-term economic viability of the town.

"At this stage it is impossible to know if our grant applications for Kirkwall will be successful but demonstrating community support strengthens our submission as community engagement and strong public support is deemed vital by the funders."
